San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has no problem saying exactly what’s on his mind—during interviews, press conferences and when addressing his team. His blunt personality can be great for those watching the interviews, but not so much for the reporter.
ESPN’s Jeff Van Gundy was his most recent victim.
During yesterday’s Mavericks-Spurs game, Van Gundy attempted to snag Popovich for a quick interview during the third and fourth quarters. He’ll probably regret doing so.
Van Gundy approached him with a timid and nervous demeanor, and Pop ate it up. He continued to interrupt Van Gundy as he attempted to string words together, until he finally mustered “You’re making me nervous…Seriously, I’ve never been so nervous in my life.” And then he continued on, saying his colleagues advised him to “explore Popovich’s feelings.”
So, naturally, Pop grabbed him and pulled him in for a big hug. And as the two finished their embrace, he mouthed “I love you.”
Popovich’s personality is made for television.
