Drew Bledsoe has been in Tony Romo’s shoes, but he still believes the Dallas Cowboys have an “obvious choice” in sticking with rookie quarterback Dak Prescott.
“I don’t know what decision they’ll make, but it seems like they’ll stick with Dak,” Bledsoe said, via ESPN. “It seems like the obvious choice.”
Back in 2001, Bledsoe was replaced by a young quarterback after suffering a serious injury early in the season. That young quarterback—a future Hall of Famer named Tom Brady—seized hold of the job and never let go, eventually leading to the Patriots trading Bledsoe before 2002.
The Cowboys are now in a similar situation.
With Romo on the sidelines recovering from another back injury, Prescott—a fourth-round pick from Mississippi State—has led the Cowboys to a 5-1 record, with seven touchdown passes and just one interception. Dallas has scored 14-point victories over the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers—two 2015 playoff teams—in back-to-back weeks.
Bledsoe can see the similarities in the 2001 Patriots and 2016 Cowboys.
“Dak is playing really, really well,” Bledsoe said. “The team is so good around him. There’s also a similarity between those two situations, New England’s with me and Dallas’ with Tony. While Tommy was playing, our offensive line got right and the team started playing well around him. When that happens, sometimes there’s some magic to a young kid being in there. The team steps up with the young kid in there. Once they do that, they keep playing that way.”
The Cowboys have already committed to Prescott as the starter coming out of the bye, when Dallas takes on the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. But at some point in the near future, head coach Jason Garrett and the Cowboys will have to make a hard decision on whether or not Romo will take his job back from Prescott.
Will Romo become the new Bledsoe? The quarterback once replaced by Brady believes he should.
