One NFL executive believes Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher is backing himself into a tough position with first overall pick Jared Goff, who remains the team’s backup quarterback.
“The problem for [coach Jeff] Fisher now is, he’s taking this thing out so long, that he’s sort of damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t,” the executive said, via Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. “If [Jared] Goff comes in and doesn’t [urinate] down his leg, then everyone will say, ‘Why didn’t you play him a month ago?’ And if he does come in and [urinate] down his leg, well, then, ‘Why did you trade up to [first overall] for him?'”
Fisher and the Rams have committed to sticking with starter Case Keenum, despite the fact that Los Angeles has lost four straight games and Keenum has nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2016.
The crowd at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum chanted, “We want Goff! We want Goff!” during the Rams’ 13-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers last Sunday.
Fisher ignored the calls for change.
But the longer he sticks with Keenum, the more criticism he could face when the inevitable quarterback change is made.
The Rams believe they are putting their prized quarterback in the best position to succeed long term. But as the losses continue to pile up, the louder the chants for Goff will become. And when Goff eventually does play, Fisher will have to face the double-edged sword of criticism likely headed his way.
