Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed had some strong comments on Friday when asked about allegations that he spit at Tampa Bay center Joe Hawley during Sunday’s 14-5 loss to the Buccaneers.
Hawley made the allegation during his Thursday night appearance on 620-WDAE.
“They were hitting me late and when I got up, when I got all fired up, one guy actually spit in my face after one of the plays and I got all fired up because I don’t think that should be part of the game at all,” Hawley said, as transcribed by Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times. “It’s one thing pushing, shouting, yelling, but as soon as he spit in my face, I was pretty fired up about that.”
When asked if it was Reed who spit on him, Hawley said: “Yeah I think that’s who it was. I’m not sure. He’s a young guy, he just … that’s not the way to do it.”
Reed told reporters Friday he didn’t know why Hawley said he spit on him.
“I mean I don’t know,” Reed said, via Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. “He can say whatever. I don’t know why he would bring that allegation towards me. I seen something saying we were hitting them late. First of all, we play in between the lines. You can go back and watch the films. You can see if he thinks he’s a clean player. I don’t know what to tell you. But as far as the allegation of me spitting in his face, that’s not true. I mean, show me the play. Show me where I did it and then you can say something better than that. I just think it’s funny.”
Reed added that Hawley must be mad that he “couldn’t block a rookie like he wanted to.”
Said Reed: “Nobody said nothing after the game. It was all cordial. Nobody was mad or anything. Now all of the sudden — I thought we were all grown men but I think it’s pretty funny. It sounds like a 14-year old girl running to everybody ‘ooh, he spit in my face’ and all that.”
Those are some strong words from the second-round pick out of Alabama.
