The Los Angeles Rams gave head coach Jeff Fisher a two-year extension Sunday, which would imply his job is safe.
Apparently not.
The man leading the four-win Rams and one of the losingest coaches in NFL history got two more years after an apparent lengthy negotiation, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
Sources: #Rams coach Jeff Fisher has, in fact, signed a contract extension. The long-discussed deal is believed to be for 2 years.

This would seem like great news for Fisher. His team just moved and he is just beginning to roll out No. 1 pick Jared Goff. The new contract makes it seem like the front office wants him to have a chance with his potential franchise quarterback before throwing in the towel.
Possibly. Take a look at a note by ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
A contract extension does not give Jeff Fisher any more job security. Rams must win and play well down stretch or his job will be in danger.

This is an odd situation, with a comment by ESPN’s Andrew Brandt perhaps helping to explain a little bit of it:
Again, on the web woven within the Rams: Jeff Fisher's agent is Marvin Demoff, father of Rams senior executive Kevin Demoff.

Alas, 7-8-1, 7-9, 6-10, 7-9 and 4-7 haven’t cost Fisher his job—it has earned him an extension.
If what Schefter says is true, Fisher will need a strong performance down the stretch. It’s odd to think why the Rams wouldn’t just wait until the offseason to do an extension if this were the case, though.
No matter what happens, this should be a fun case of hindsight. The latest team to move and with a No. 1 pick just got a whole lot more interesting to watch.
