Ryan Fitzpatrick might as well have just been sitting there with reporters when Jets coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media after Monday night’s 41-10 loss to the Colts.
Bowles announced to the media that Bryce Petty would be the Jets starting quarterback for the rest of the season before he told Fitzpatrick, according to Pro Football Talk.
“I’d been meaning to talk to him and I got tied up with a few things,” Bowles said.
He got tied up with a few things? Bowles is an NFL head coach, not a manager of some understaffed operation who’s doing the jobs of three workers. He has enough people working under him to delegate these “things.”
Letting a quarterback know he’s been benched before telling the media is Head Coaching 101.
When it comes to wins and losses, Bowles shouldn’t be fired for one bad season. He almost got the Jets to the playoffs last year with a journeyman quarterback.
But if Bowles doesn’t improve his administrative skills, the organization will become a laughingstock.
