Rookie wide receiver Josh Doctson, the Redskins’ first-round pick, is done for the season according to the team’s website.
Doctson, the 22nd overall pick, caught two passes for 66 yards in two games before being placed on injured reserve with an Achilles injury. He hasn’t played since Week 2. On Wednesday, center Kory Lichtensteiger became the player designated to return from injured reserve because of injuries on the Redskins’ offensive line. The means Doctson can’t return.
“You know, we had high hopes for him coming out of TCU and the talent that he has and he’s disappointed but these things happen,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “There’s been a lot – if you look around the league, there’s a lot of first-rounders that didn’t get up and running this year for whatever reason and a lot of draft picks.”
Bengals cornerback William Jackson III, drafted 24th, is the only 2016 first-round pick to play in fewer games than Doctson. He had surgery on a torn pectoral in August and hasn’t played.
On the bright side for the Redskins, if Doctson heals up during the offseason, it will be like having an extra first-round draft pick because they essentially didn’t have him this season. With Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson set to become free agents, they’ll need Doctson to hit the ground running.
