San Diego Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa was in the middle of an epic rookie campaign before suffering a potential concussion against the Carolina Panthers in Week 14.
Bosa, the rookie who was in the headlines for a contract standoff before the season, tried to take down Carolina’s Cam Newton and suffered the injury.
Max Henson of the Panthers’ official website detailed the play:

ESPN’s John Clayton confirmed the rookie went for a concussion check:

It’s a highly unfortunate turn of events for Bosa, who after the preseason controversy over his contract slowly worked his way into things. Once he did, Bosa looked like the best rookie defender in the NFL—if not one of the best pass rushers in the league. Through eight games, Bosa had recorded 5.5 sacks.
Before his exit, Bosa hadn’t been able to help the Chargers much on the road. The Chargers found themselves down 23-7 at halftime. Like many, Bosa and the Chargers simply had a hard time bringing down Newton.
With any luck, this isn’t a lingering issue for Bosa—he looks like a frontrunner for some individual rookie honors this year based on his explosive play.
