Wide receiver/kick returner Lucky Whitehead was left behind for the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 14 game against the New York Giants after showing up late to a team meeting last Saturday. On Tuesday, he apologized to the team and vowed it won’t happen again.
“I talked to my guys, I apologized and I won’t let it happen again,” Whitehead said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I took the punishment and I’ll move forward from here.”
“Coach made a decision and I took responsibility for my actions and took the punishment. It was tough but he pretty much just told me to go home. It was real disappointment. I almost bought myself a flight to come out anyway, but it was tough for me watching the game. It hurt.”
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones told reporters Monday that Whitehead will play against Tampa Bay on Sunday, but head coach Jason Garrett said the team will determine during the week if Whitehead will resume his role as the return specialist.
Whitehead has averaged 23.8 yards on 10 kickoff returns and 8.8 yards on 19 punt returns this season.
