Despite a disappointing 2015 season and a 2016 season mostly lost to injury, running back Eddie Lacy remains hopeful he will return to the Green Bay Packers for next season.
“I definitely hope so; I would love to be,” Lacy said, via ESPN. “I don’t see myself wanting to be anywhere else, but that’s something I can’t focus on right now. I just have to get myself better and put myself in a position to be good and do whatever I have to do.”
Lacy played in just five games this season after needing surgery to repair his injured left ankle. He finished with 360 rushing yards on 71 carries, good for an average of 5.1 yards per carry.
A second-round pick of the Packers back in 2013, Lacy started his NFL career with back-to-back seasons with over 1,000 yards. But things went south in 2015, when he fought injuries and obvious weight issues in rushing for a career-low 758 yards and three touchdowns.
A summer of getting his weight under control netted positive results to start 2016 for Lacy, who now wants to return to the Packers despite his rookie contract expiring this offseason.
There’s likely to be interest from the Packers, especially if Lacy is interested in a short deal. Green Bay could team Lacy with emerging hybrid running back Ty Montgomery to form a potent 1-2 punch in the backfield.
Over four NFL seasons, Lacy has 3,435 rushing yards, 101 receptions and 29 total touchdowns. He will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
