Maybe the addition of Christine Michael can change what is undoubtedly one of the oddest statistics of the 2016 NFL season.
Entering Week 11, the Green Bay Packers still do not have a rushing touchdown by a player not named Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers quarterback has three, and all three scores came off scrambles. The rest of Green Bay’s rushers—which includes Eddie Lacy, James Starks, Ty Montgomery, Aaron Ripkowski, Randall Cobb, Knile Davis and Don Jackson—have combined for 165 rushes and zero touchdowns in 2016.
Michael, who was claimed on waivers by the Packers on Wednesday, scored six touchdowns on 117 carries before being released by the Seattle Seahawks this week.
Head coach Mike McCarthy praised his new running back on Thursday.
“Dynamic football player; I love his running style,” McCarthy said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “Once again, he’s productive, his ability to get in and out of breaks, I think the one thing I know best about him is just the way he’s able to change direction and explode on the second and third cuts. I think he’s a good fit for us.”
Michael practiced for the first time on Thursday.
Starks, who returned from a knee injury last week, is expected to remain the starter. But that may change if Michael gets up to speed with the offense and flashes playmaking ability on the field.
Regardless of who is playing running back, the Packers could use someone other than Rodgers to run the ball into the end zone.
