There’s no shortage of disappointing NFL teams this season, and the Cardinals are right up there among the most disappointing teams of 2016.
In explaining the Cardinals’ 38-19 loss Sunday at Atlanta, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians might have touched on a bigger problem behind his team’s 4-6-1 record.
“I thought defensively we had some guys get out of their lane again and try to do too much, tried to get on the stat sheet instead of just doing their job,” Arians said via Arizona Sports 98.7.
The Cardinals started the season 1-3, won two straight to get to .500, but have gone 1-3-1 since then. The only teams they’ve beaten since September are the Jets and 49ers.
Arians also said a “selfishness” has “crept in,” which falls in line with what he said about his players chasing stats.
“The veterans obviously haven’t done anything about it, so maybe young guys will step up and make the opportunity they need,” Arians said.
The Cardinals host the Redskins Sunday. The Redskins (6-4-1) occupy the last playoff spot. If the Cardinals find a way to win that game, they’d be only a game behind them and they’d have the tiebreaker.
So it’s a good time for Arians to try to light a fire under his players.
