When the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs face off on Thursday night, quarterback Derek Carr will face a team he’s generally struggled against during his NFL career.
Over five games against the Chiefs since 2014, Carr has completed 57.7 percent of his passes and averaged 5.3 yards per attempt, with six touchdowns, five interceptions and a passer rating of 72.0.
The Raiders are 1-4 in those games. Carr hasn’t produced a passer rating above 85.0 in any of the five games.
“We’ve been fortunate, I’ll tell you that,’’ Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said, via ESPN. “Derek Carr is a rising star … We’ve had success against him there in Oakland and hopefully we have the same success here with the crowd we have here. It’s going to be a challenge for him. It’s always a challenge to stop him.”
Last month, the Chiefs forced two Carr turnovers in a 26-10 win. Kansas City swept the season series last year, tallying five interceptions and 10 sacks of Carr.
“Every game is different, but you’re definitely more confident as you get more success,” Johnson said.
The Raiders are 10-2 and in first place in the AFC West. The Chiefs are 9-3, but a win over Oakland on Thursday night would vault Kansas City into the division lead.
Expect the outcome to rest on Carr’s shoulders. The Raiders are 7-1 this season when Carr has a passer rating over 90.0.
One of the favorites for NFL MVP, Carr can add to his impressive resume by breaking his slump against the Chiefs on Thursday night.
