Drew Brees might be 37 years old, but he’s currently enjoying one of the most productive seasons of his incredible NFL career.
Heading into Thursday night’s showdown with the Carolina Panthers, Brees has 2,992 passing yards and 24 touchdowns—with a 69.9 completion percentage and 107.0 passer rating. He’s on pace for 5,319 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2016.
“I have a good process throughout the week, probably a better process than I’ve had the last few years … my routine as far as getting my body mentally, emotionally and physically ready to play each week,” Brees said, via Mike Triplett of ESPN. “I’m playing with a great group of guys on both sides of the ball, this whole team. So I don’t focus on anything other than getting myself and my team ready to win each and every week. That’s how I measure myself.”
According to receiver Willie Snead, Brees is “locked in.” And it’s hard to disagree with him.
Brees has posted five straight games with a passer rating over 100.0. He’s thrown at least three touchdowns in four of the last five, and he has only three games under 300 yards over nine games in 2016.
The Saints have own four of their last six games, and it could have been five of the last six had New Orleans avoided disaster on the go-ahead extra point against the Denver Broncos last Sunday. Brees, of course, threw the game-tying touchdown pass just moments earlier.
“I think he played well last year, and I think the key at this point in the season is us finding ways to win games,” head coach Sean Payton said. “But you certainly see his health and his accuracy and you see the mobility, and those are obviously good signs for your starting quarterback.”
Brees and the 4-5 Saints take on the Panthers in a must-win game on Thursday night in Carolina.
