The Jacksonville Jaguars are one game away from setting a new NFL record for takeaway ineptitude.
According to Michael DiRocco of ESPN, the Jaguars haven’t forced a turnover since Week 4, a stretch of five straight games that is tied for the longest in the NFL since 1970. Without a takeaway against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the Jaguars will set the new mark for consecutive games without a turnover forced.
“I think we have to be able to find a way to make [turnovers] happen,” said linebacker Paul Posluszny, although he admitted the Jaguars aren’t missing opportunities to get takeaways.
After 10 weeks, Jacksonville has managed only three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The defense’s five takeaways rank dead last in the NFL, and only one other team—the Lions—has less than eight.
The Jaguars’ last takeaway came way back in Week 4, when rookie defensive end Yannick Ngakoue intercepted Andrew Luck during Jacksonville’s win over the Indianapolis in London.
According to DiRocco, it’s been over 355 on-the-field minutes since that takeaway.
The Jaguars offense, on the other hand, has 12 giveaways during the last five games. Not surprisingly, Jacksonville is 1-4 during those games.
