The Jaguars could make history when they visit the Lions Sunday, but not the kind of history they thought they’d make entering this season.
If the Jaguars (2-7) fail to force a turnover, it will be their sixth straight game without a takeaway, according to ESPN.com that would be the longest such streak since the merger in 1970.
This could be history in the making because the Lions (5-4) have the second-fewest giveaways in the league with six.
Jacksonville already owns the record for time without forcing a turnover. It’s been 335 minutes and 33 seconds since rookie Yannick Ngakoue intercepted Andrew Luck in Week 4. That was the last of the Jaguars’ five takeaways this season. That mark is the lowest in the league.
The Jaguars were supposed to be an up-and-coming team this season. Very few envisioned a 2-7 record at this point, and this inability to disrupt opposing offenses wasn’t supposed to happen. They signed defenders Malik Jackson, Prince Amukamara and Tashaun Gipson in free agency and their first five draft picks all were defensive players.
These are the same old Jaguars, but at least Sunday’s turnover drama puts a new spin on the situation.
