Jeff Fisher, Rams sticking with Case Keenum as starting QB

St Louis Rams v Baltimore Ravens

An interception spree from Case Keenum in London will not be enough for Jeff Fisher and the Los Angeles Rams to make a change at quarterback.

According to Fisher, Keenum will continue to start, while first overall pick Jared Goff remains the backup.

“I’ve not changed my mindset whatsoever with respect to Case and Jared,” Fisher said on Monday, via ESPN.

Keenum was a disaster on Sunday, throwing four interceptions—including the game-clinching turnover on a regrettable pass to the end zone—during a 17-10 loss to the New York Giants at Twickenham Stadium. Keenum actually threw interceptions on the Rams’ final three possessions of the game, with the first of the three setting up New York’s go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Rams have now lost three straight games after starting 3-1.

While Fisher said Goff is expected to get first-team reps over the next two weeks, that decision is based solely on the Rams being on a bye week in Week 8.

Fisher was quick to defend Keenum.

“What Case has done — we won three straight games with him,” Fisher said. “Yes, I understand we’ve lost three straight. But the quarterback position, in my opinion, is not the reason why we lost the football games, nor was it yesterday. At first glance, if you look — ‘Oh, he threw four interceptions.’ You look at the actual plays, and as you guys know, interceptions — you can place blame wherever you want.”

After seven weeks, Keenum ranks 27th in the NFL in passer rating (77.5), and his 10 interceptions trail only Ryan Fitzpatrick (11) for the league lead.

The Rams play the Carolina Panthers in Week 9.
