Jerry Jones thinks he can convince Tony Romo to stay next year

Baltimore Ravens v Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones seems to believe that he can have the best of both worlds.

The Cowboys owner envisions a scenario where Tony Romo plays a role in a Super Bowl run this season and happily accepts the role as Dak Prescott’s backup and stays in Dallas next season.

Romo, 36, is widely expected to look for a place where he can start next season, but Jones told Gary Myers of the New York Daily News that he thinks he can talk Romo out of requesting a trade or a release.

It’s hard to see that happening. It’s also hard to see how Romo will play a role for the Cowboys this season without Prescott getting hurt or becoming ineffective. The most realistic way Romo gets on the field in any kind of storybook setting would be if the Cowboys have a huge lead in the fourth quarter of the NFC championship game at Dallas, and Romo trots onto the field to huge cheers for some garbage-time work.

That could happen. But Romo staying in Dallas next year to be Prescott’s backup? Good luck with that, Jerry.
