Owner Jim Irsay believes the Indianapolis Colts—who are currently in last place in the AFC South—could be undefeated in 2016 if not for a few unfortunate bounces.
“We could be 6-0 if the ball bounces a little differently,” Irsay said, via the Indianapolis Star.
Instead, the Colts are 2-4 and coming off one of the most embarrassing losses of the 2016 season. Up 23-9 over the Houston Texans last Sunday night, the Colts gave up 14 points in the last 2:37 and lost in overtime.
The team’s four losses this season are by a combined 21 points, with three of the four by four points or less. The only loss by more than four points came against the Denver Broncos, who returned an Andrew Luck fumble for a touchdown with the Colts down six points late in the fourth quarter in Week 2.
The Colts also allowed a late field goal in a loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1, and failed to complete a comeback against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London in Week 4.
Irsay can claim his team is unlucky, that a few breaks here or there represents the major difference between first and last place in the AFC South. But the reality is much harsher for the Colts, who field one of the least talented rosters in the NFL.
A terrible offensive line has already given up a league-high 23 sacks this season. On defense, the Colts have allowed at least 22 points in every game in 2016, with only eight sacks and six takeaways.
To their credit, the Colts have been in every game this season. But bad teams always seem to find ways to lose. To be 6-0 right now would have taken a lot more than just better luck in Indy.
