Bills running back LeSean McCoy sat out practice Thursday with a hamstring injury, according to Pro Football Talk, and his chances of playing Sunday against the Patriots are getting slimmer by the day.
McCoy’s hamstring also kept him out of practice Wednesday. He tried to play through the injury last Sunday at Miami, but ran for just 11 yards on eight carries in a 28-25 loss.
The Bills (4-3) can move within a game of the Patriots (6-1) in the AFC East and own the tiebreaker if they win Sunday at home. It also would be the first time the Bills have beaten the Patriots twice is a season since 1999, also the last year they made the playoffs.
For the Bills to make a move in the division Sunday and take a step closer to that long-awaited playoff berth, it’s looking like Mike Gillislee will have to team up with quarterback Tyrod Taylor to form the Bills’ rushing attack. Gillislee gained five yards on 20 carries in Miami. He gained 20 yards on one carry but lost 10 on another. For the season, Gillislee has 137 yards on 22 carries (6.2 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.
As big as Sunday’s game is, the best thing for McCoy is probably rest. It’s probably the best thing for the Bills, too. Sitting out this one game could mean he misses fewer games down the road.
