Nick Mangold’s Jets career could be over

Baltimore Ravens v New York Jets

Nick Mangold has been through all kinds of ups and downs in his 11 years with the Jets.

The seven-time Pro Bowl center has been to conference championship games in 2009 and 2010, the same two seasons that he was named First Team All-Pro, but he and his teammates have endured five straight non-playoff seasons since 2011.

Mangold and the Jets entered 2016 with high hopes that their season would last well into January. Instead, Mangold’s career with the Jets could be coming to an unceremonious end.

The Jets (3-9) placed Mangold on injured reserve Thursday, according to the New York Daily News. He had missed four straight games with an ankle injury, and re-injured the ankle when he returned for Monday night’s 41-10 home loss to the Colts.

The four games that Mangold has missed this season equals the number of games he missed in his first 10 seasons.

Mangold would count $9.1 million against the salary cap next season, which means the Jets are likely to cut the 32-year-old loose.

This doesn’t mean that Mangold’s NFL career is over. It just means that after this season, it will be a while before any Jet wears No. 74 again, if ever.
