Jay Cutler’s days are numbered in Chicago.
Even though the Bears will be forced to use Cutler after Brian Hoyer suffered a broken arm on Thursday night, they still plan to move on from the 33-year-old quarterback after this season, a source tells Jason Cole of Bleacher Report.
In seven-plus seasons with Chicago, Cutler is 50-49 as the starter with 150 touchdowns and 104 interceptions. The Bears traded two first-round draft picks, a third-round pick and Kyle Orton to acquire Cutler from Denver, and now the team is preparing to cut ties with the one-time Pro Bowler.
Cutler has been sidelined with a thumb injury since Week 2, but he should be ready to go soon, possibly in time for the Bears’ Week 8 game against the Minnesota Vikings on Halloween night.
Cutler is signed through 2020, so the Bears could try to work out a trade. If not, they will have to release him and take the hit in dead money. It would be in Cutler’s best interest to resume playing this season, so he can show teams why they should sign him after a mediocre stint in Chicago.
