As the NFL trade deadline fast approaches, one team to keep an eye on is the San Diego Chargers.
According to a report by Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are open to trading for a wide receiver, but the team is unwilling to part with first- or second-day draft picks.
San Diego’s passing attack, despite ranking fifth in the NFL in yards per game (275), has been decimated by injuries at the receiver position. Keenan Allen tore his ACL in Week 1, while Steve Johnson suffered a torn meniscus during training camp, and running back Danny Woodhead, who led the team in receptions a year ago with 80, tore his ACL in Week 2.
The Chargers have been making do with Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams at the receiver position, but both are dealing with knee injuries.
Acee notes the Chargers don’t have enough cap space to land high-priced options such as the 49ers’ Torrey Smith or the Bears’ Alshon Jeffery, but Marqise Lee of the Jaguars or Corey Brown of the Panthers are potential targets that might fit the Chargers’ budget.
Lee has a cap hit of $1.4 million and Brown has a cap hit of $605,000, according to Spotrac.
After a 1-4 start, the Chargers have won back-to-back games and are fighting to get back into the postseason discussion. Landing another weapon for quarterback Philip Rivers would help them do that.
