Antonio Brown is tied for the NFL lead with 10 touchdown catches, but the Steelers have had to pay a 15-yard tax on three of them because of celebration penalties.
Ben Roethlisberger, who has thrown all 10 of those touchdown passes to Brown, said on his weekly radio show on 93.7 The Fan via ESPN.com that Brown has been talked to about the excessive touchdown dances.
His latest came during the Steelers’ 28-7 win at Indianapolis on Thanksgiving. Brown caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger that gave the Steelers a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Then he teamed with Le’Veon Bell for the celebration, and out came the flag.
Chris Boswell kicked off from the Pittsburgh 20, and Jordan Todman returned it to the Steelers 47 to spark the Colts’ only scoring drive. A successful fake punt kept the drive going.
“He knows, we all know, Coach (Mike) Tomlin brought it up yesterday, that is a huge penalty and we can’t do that,” Roethlisberger said. “We put our kick coverage team in a bad situation and we can’t have that, and AB knows that.”
At least that touchdown celebration, though choreographed, was suitable for all audiences. Brown was flagged for twerking in the season opener at Washington.
Odell Beckham Jr. and the Giants come to Pittsburgh on Sunday. Beckham has one touchdown celebration penalty this season. And even though the Steelers don’t want to see any more such penalties from Brown, they also don’t want to give Beckham a chance to tie him in that category.
