Tyreek Hill became a legitimate NFL star Sunday night. He became the first player since Gayle Sayers in 1965 to score a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a return touchdown in the Chiefs’ 30-27 overtime win at Denver.
Hill isn’t quite in the same stratosphere as Michael Jordan. Not yet, anyway. But that didn’t prevent him from name-dropping the Bulls’ NBA dynasty of the 1990s.
“Yo, we’re like MJ and the Bulls — we don’t panic, man,” Hill said via NFL.com.
Alex Smith and the Chiefs didn’t panic when they were down 24-16 with three minutes left and no timeouts. Smith drove the Chiefs 75 yards and Hill, a fifth-round rookie out of West Alabama, caught the game-tying touchdown pass with 12 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
The Broncos won the toss and went up by a field goal in OT. The Chiefs countered with a field goal. Then Brandon McManus missed a 62-yard attempt and Cairo Santos kicked the game-winning 34-yarder that bounced off the left upright and fell just behind the right one with two second left.
With the win, the Chiefs (8-3) have second place to themselves in the AFC West. They’re one game behind the Raiders, who they’ve beaten in Oakland and play at home on Dec. 8.
The Chiefs have a long way to go before they match Michael Jordan and the Bulls, but a division title would give them a clearer path to the franchise’s first championship since 1969, and that would be a good start.
