World Series ratings up, NFL ratings continue to decline

Wild Card Playoffs - Atlanta Falcons v New York Giants

It’s hard to accept, but the NFL’s product just isn’t as good as it used to be anymore. Games have been marred by countless penalty flags, poor scheduling and politics off the field.

Monday Night Football just doesn’t have the same luster it used to, possibly because of Thursday Night Football, or the awful matchups on the field, or both. Most NFL fans will tune in to watch their respective teams play on Sundays, but not much else. It’s no longer a day to park themselves on the coach and sit around and watch football.

The numbers back that up, too.

Monday Night Football ratings have plummeted, and are down 24 percent from the same time last year, with Sunday Night Football dropping 19 percent.

But that doesn’t mean that viewership is down for all sports, as the World Series ratings are up 32 percent from last year. This chart from Cork Gaines of Business Insider really puts things in perspective.

The owners are going to make money regardless, but at some point, the league needs to take steps to improving the play on the field. Otherwise, baseball might, once again, become America’s favorite pastime.
