Jerry Week Ends And Preseason Approaches

BJUpton 000

Today is August 9, the anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death and therefore the end of Jerry Week.  However, the preseason begins in two days and football is upon us.  I don’t know why I choose to do this to myself, but I am currently listening to a Nate Kaeding interview from 1360 AM.  He was talking about Bob Sanders being a fellow Hawkeye and I just remember Sanders taunting Tweety after his miss in the ’07 playoff game.  I found out yesterday that The Organization “has too many player requests” for the 9/18 game at Foxboro.  To be honest, FAITHFUL READER, I think that the team isn’t nearly as interested in being nice to me now that Jim Steeg is gone.  Oh well, it will just allow me to be even more the outisder and provide an even more objective.  Who am I fucking kidding?  I will never be subjective about the Chargers.  That’s why people occasionally read what I have to say, right?  I have never professed to be an expert, but rather a passionate (to say the least) fan with an above-average writing ability.  Anyway, I see that tickets for the aforementioned game are about a buck fifty.  It would be one thing to sit in the “Bolt section,” which I have purchased tickets in since the Chargers played the Patriots in 2005.  But I don’t think I am going to drop down a ton of money for a Week Two game in which I have to spend three hours defending myself and my maddening football team.  For that kind of dough, I will go out to San Diego (or elsewhere) in January when everything is on the line.  As I said last August, if they don’t make it there then it’s an even bigger disappointment.  If that happens this year, I do believe heads will roll.

Plus, if I do get to San Diego for a playoff game and they choke again I can lead an old-style Roddy McDowell Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes rebellion, not some Gollum-based CGI “Upright Simian Brigade” shit.  Sorry, I don’t like remakes and you can’t have an Apes movie without the leather-based getups.  Anyway, I had a feed my son in the back seat of my wife’s car yesterday (I actually sat in Sarah’s booster seat to do it.  As I was doing so, I heard Rich Bissacia and Norv on Sirius’ training camp tour.  The former sounded very Gruden-like (we’ll take what we can get) in the fact that he sounded like his voice was going.  I can only hope it was from screaming.  As for Norval, he said all the things we want to hear “we’re gonna hit the ground running, fast start is crucial, etc.  Like everything else, we’ll believe it when we see it.  This article appeared in the NY Times today, “Charger Fans Fear Losing Their Team”  I think Charger fans more fear another January meltdown or having that oh-so familiar feeling creep up in the pit of our stomachs on opening day.  You know what I mean, the “here we go again” feeling.

I was actually in the NY Times Blog talking about the Bolts in 2008.   It was nice to be quoted along with all the other blog-authors.  My buddy Jeff, who just bought me a bottle of the best tequila I have had in this country, suggested at the time that we all join together to form a Super-site–not a bad idea.  Anyway, as I was going through the NY Times blog, I noticed this piece on our most recent season.  No argument that Cesaire is better than Castillo, although I am surprised anyone would call the latter an adequate anchor.

Anyway, I will be Tweeting on Thursday Night and expect a full report on your desk the following morning.  I am also assembling a brief bio for a possible book on “Superfans.”  I’ll share a little when it’s done as I hope to get back to work on my larger tome, Drunk On Sunday

Talk to you after the preseason opener,

RLW
