The New York Knicks want to build a superteam of their own—and Kristaps Porzingis plans on making it happen.
After watching teams such as the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors amass unbelievable talent and push for championships, the Knicks sound ready to enter a similar strategy.
Porzingis told the media before a game he wants to hit the recruiting trail, according to the New York Daily News‘ Stefan Bondy:
I think (I’ll recruit players), yeah. Of course, you want to build a team around you so you can win, so you can go all the way and win the championship one day. Of course, that’s on everybody’s mind, I think, that’s in a position to do that.
But right now, I’m not worried about who I can recruit. I’m just focusing on my team, being the best I can this year and then going forward, you know, stuff can happen.
It’s an interesting peek into the future plan of the Knicks. New York hasn’t been able to woo anyone to town to join Carmelo Anthony, with Derrick Rose’s arrival coming via trade.
This should change the more Porzingis continues to develop. He looks way ahead of schedule this year, averaging 20.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game on an average of 34.5 minutes, a six-minute increase over his rookie season.
Believe it or not, the Knicks currently clutch the third seed in the Eastern Conference at 14-11, hence Porzingis not being too worried about recruiting for the future right now. A playoff berth, though, would sure help on the recruiting trail.
Alas, with Porzingis letting a bit of his future plans go public, expect the Knicks rumors featuring major future free agents to fire up any second now.
