It sure looked as if Bryce Harper had played his final game as a member of the Washington Nationals when the team’s 2018 campaign wrapped up.
Harper waved goodbye to the fans (as you can see above) — saluting them for all their support over the years. There were reportedly a number of teams in the mix for his services, and judging by his demeanor and social media activity, it appeared as if Harper thought he was done in DC. Superagent Scott Boras probably did as well.
And yet, here we stand, with the Nationals now emerging as one of the most likely landing spots for Harper going forward.
The White Sox, Phillies, Giants and Cubs were all reportedly in the mix as well, but Chicago was not willing to offer him a 10-year deal. And judging by how the Giants and Cubs do business, we would guess that they weren’t, either.
And, coincidentally, the Nationals are emerging as one of the more likely landing spots for Harper, with Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reporting that there’s “momentum building” for a return to DC. The report reads:
According to a source, there is momentum building toward Harper’s return to Washington, while the Phillies — who are set to meet with Harper this week in Las Vegas — appear to be turning up their pursuit of Machado.
The Nationals selected Harper with the first overall pick in the 2010 draft. He played on a one-year deal last season, with the hopes of getting his massive payday this winter. It hasn’t happened yet, but could soon. The question remains where he will end up. Stay tuned.
