Tonight’s UFC 205 was already going to be a historic event regardless, but now it has officially broken some records. Bloomberg reports that the box office gate receipts for the event total over $17 million, which is a record for Madison Square Garden (the previous record being $11 million for a 1999 fight between Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis). It also demolishes the UFC’s previous gate record of $12 million for UFC 129 in Toronto.
“It’s the biggest event we’re ever going to do,” UFC COO Lawrence Epstein told Bloomberg. “For pay-per-view we believe it will also be our biggest event of all time, but there’s also this brand enhancement we’ll get out of this event that frankly we couldn’t get in any other city in the world.”
And if you’re still looking to grab a ticket for tonight’s show, it’ll cost you a MMA record $1,227 (on average) for a seat (according to TicketIQ).
