Even the Soldier of God isn’t immune from the wrath of the New York State Athletic Commission. After giving time outs to Kelvin Gastelum (six months) and Thiago Alves (three months) for their UFC 205 weight cutting fiascoes (kudos for that), the NYSAC has also now suspended Yoel Romero, MMA Fighting reports. His offense? Leaving the octagon after viciously knocking out Chris Weidman to do a soldier march on the apron. It is against the NYSAC’s rules to leave the cage before a fight is officially over, and Bruce Buffer hadn’t announced Romero the winner yet before his impromptu marching display.
However, the suspension is probably moot – it’s only for 60 days, meaning Romero is eligible to fight again on January 12th of next year. With his expected fight with Michael Bisping not expected to go down until spring 2017, this shouldn’t affect Romero’s title shot.
But beware MMA fighters – the NYSAC doesn’t play around.
