Just noticed Microsoft Bing has this Bing Predicts thing. Football is life, so why not promote your product with an NFL tie-in.
They should not have screwed this up, however.
Here’s the 2017 won-loss record Bing Predicts for NFC East teams:
1 – Cowboys, 11 – 5
2 – Eagles, 9 – 7
3 – Redskins, 8 – 8
4 – Giants, 7 – 9
Bing pegs the Packers with a 7 – 8 record and says the Saints will be best in the regular season with a 12 – 4 finish.
From Bing Predicts: How Each NFL Team Will Finish This Year.
Um, okay.
Aaron Rodgers would tell Packers fans to R-E-L-A-X. Bing suggests the window for Eli Manning may be closing. That shall be true someday, maybe even this year. It’s still the only forecast we’ve seen to have the Giants so low. They won 11 games last year.
Evidently, the author wrote this story before Ezekiel Elliott’s current embarrassment. He is lost to the Cowboys for six games, which will include the Cowboys first meeting with the Redskins. Elliott should have been named the AP’s 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year instead of Dak Prescott.
The ‘Boys were near perfectly balanced in pass-to-run ratio and in scores by passing and by running. That’s a lot of weight on young Prescott’s shoulders that should have earned a mention in Bing Predicts’ assessment.
All of these stories predict unwarranted success in advance for the Eagles. We shall see in NFL Week 1.
(ESPN’s Mike Sando projects nine wins for both the Eagles and the Redskins.)
Here is Bing Predicts’ take on the ‘Skins 2017 season:
“The Redskins’ defensive line got plenty of attention in the offseason, adding free agent defensive tackles Stacy McGee and Terrell McClain and using the first-round pick on defensive end Jonathan Allen. Look for Ziggy Hood to rotate in at both end and tackle. Quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is playing on a franchise tag hoping for a big payday after the season, will have to work his magic without receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, who were lost in free agency. The Redskins, who open at home against the Eagles on Sept. 10, could see a slight improvement from 2016’s 8-7-1 record.”
A .500 finish is not far off from Hog Heaven’s personal prediction for the team. The Redskins will do better if the defense fights to a mid-tier rank for turnovers and third-down stops.
As for Bing, Microsoft uses the usual stats to predict outcomes. For wisdom of the crowds, it turns to “social sentiments,” the stuff you say on your handheld thingies.
When it comes to wisdom of the crowds, better to go by where people put their money, not their thumbs. That’s where sports books are handy.
Here’s Bovada’s over/under line for season wins for the NFC East.
Cowboys – 9.5
Giants – 9
Eagles – 8
Redskins – 7.5
Bovada has the Eagles as one-point favorites when they meet the Redskins in the opening game Sunday.
