Today, Boston Bruins forward David Backes will have a hearing with the NHL’s department of Player Safety. Let’s review.
Thursday night, with 2:03 left in regulation, Backes caught New Jersey Devils forward New Jersey Devils forward Blake Coleman with a shoulder to the head. For his efforts, Backes was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for an illegal check to the head. When it’s all said and done, the move could end up being very costly for Backes. If Backes is suspended for more than a game, he will end up getting missing the Winter Classic.

Backes is a repeat offender. The question at hand, how long will Backes be suspended? I would imagine a 1-3 game suspension.
Finally, Backes has struggled this season, in 33 games he’s scored three goals and 10 points, he’s also a minus-five. Backes was held scoreless in the first 13 games that he played in. In the last five games, Backes has scored (0g-3a—3pts). Backes is making 6 million a year, and the Bruins fans have become impatient with the former Minnesota State Maverick.
