Detroit Lions Release WR Marvin Jones Jr. After He Announced A Break From Football

33-year-old Marvin Jones Jr. is in his 12th NFL season, six have been spent as a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions.

Jones issued a heartfelt note on social media announcing that he is stepping away from football to deal with personal matters.

It was not clear how long Jones intended to be away, but the Lions subsequently released him so it is obviously believed to be a long-term separation.

What Jones Said

He admitted that it was a difficult decision but said “I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar.”

Jones also wrote:

“To my brothers and coaches, I will be rooting for you every step of the way!  This is the year! Go get it!!!!”

The Lions are having a great season so this had to be a bittersweet decision for Jones who had five catches (out of ten targets) for 35 yards in 2023.

We send our prayers and well wishes to Jones and his family in whatever they are dealing with.

The Lions worked with Jones in giving him what he needs, but they will also be in the market for a wide receiver.

Could Jarvis Landry Be A Possibility?

One free agent whose name keeps popping up on social media in connection to several teams looking for a veteran WR is free agent Jarvis Landry.

He is 30 years old and has not played since 2022 when he was with the New Orleans Saints.

Landry started his career with the Miami Dolphins and subsequently played for the Cleveland Browns.
