Draft Prospect: Maurkice Pouncey

Apologies about the delay of these previews…  In light of some of the Eagles recent roster moves, I also reevaluated where I thought the Eagles would be pressing hard in the first round.

Today we’re taking a look at Florida Gator C Maurkice Pouncey.  Pouncey is coming off a junior campaign that resulted in him winning the Rimington Trophy, which goes annually to the nations top center.  A three year starter he was also a Freshman All-American.  Many scouts and analysts believe he could eventually transition to OG so there is some flexibility to be had with this selection.

Maurkice Pouncey 6-5, 304 lbs.

Why this makes sense…Jamaal Jackson will be recovering from a torn ACL and is very questionable on his status for the beginning of the year.  Jackson will soon hit the big age 30 for ball players so this could be a position of need for the beginning of the year.  The Eagles stockpiled some center talent but nobody near the potential of Pouncey.  Pouncey is the top center prospect in the draft.  It is time the Eagles bulked up their offensive line with first grade talent to match the bulldozing DL of the Cowboys.

Why this will not happen…The Eagles starting centers under the Reid regime are not high profile names.  In fact, they are undrafted guys.  Jamaal Jackson and Hank Fraley who have done a majority of the work in recent memory were both undrafted players brought in and did admirable jobs.  Also even though Andy Reid is known for loving lineman he has only drafted one OL (Shawn Andrews) with a first round pick in the last decade.  Reid likes stockpiling OL talent in the later rounds.
