New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has become a target for the referees, something quarterback Eli Manning says he brought on himself.
Beckham got hit with a flag in Monday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings and told Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press he’s a target now:
“It’s always, it’s just my fault. That’s all I look at it as, it’s my fault. Whatever you want to call it,” Beckham said. “I just have to understand if I sneeze the wrong way, it’ll be a flag, it’ll be a fine. If I tie my shoe the wrong way, it might be a fine or a flag. It is what it is. You have to understand that.”
Well, yeah. Beckham had the illegal shots at Josh Norman last year, threw fists in Buffalo and had a blindside block on Kenny Vaccaro. Just a week ago, he erupted on the sideline and the broadcast caught him crying.
Manning let loose on the situation as well, admitting Beckham has to keep his behavior in check because past transgressions mean officials will watch him closer than usual.
“He’s got to play smart,” Manning said, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “He can’t afford to do anything they’ll call. He’s kind of brought that upon himself, so he’s got to realize that… No doubt. Can’t afford the penalties.”
The antics and extra attention from the zebras has Beckham off his game. Through four contests, he’s only recorded 22 catches for 303 yards.
Until Beckham heeds Manning’s advice, he’ll likely continue to fail to meet expectations on the field.
