Even though the Atlanta Hawks considered trading Paul Millsap last summer, general manager Wes Wilcox says the team wants to keep the three-time All-Star long term.
“Paul is a great professional, and it’s absolutely our goal for Paul to be a Hawk long-term,” Wilcox said in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution‘s Chris Vivlamore. “It’s as simple as that.”
Millsap has been Atlanta’s best player over the past two seasons. He led the team in points (17.7), rebounds (9.0), steals (1.8) and blocks (1.7) last season.
The 31-year-old has a player option for the 2017-18 season. Per Vivlamore, Millsap has yet to decide whether he will opt out and become an unrestricted free agent. The Hawks risk getting nothing in return for Millsap if they don’t trade him.
It will be interesting to see what the team does at the trade deadline. A player of Millsap’s caliber could fetch Atlanta a pretty big haul, but he’s absolutely worth keeping if the team can get a deal done.
