The Steelers have played great football for the majority of this season, but their self-inflicted wounds late in games have really hurt them, especially the fumble by wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the final seconds of Sunday’s loss to the Saints.
Smith-Schuster caught a pass from Ben Roethlisberger on the team’s final drive, with the team trailing by a field goal. The reception put them in field-goal range, just inside the 35-yard line. But the Saints were able to keep Smith-Schuster upright, with Sheldon Rankins stripping him of the football to ice the game.
The mistake proved to be a pivotal one, as the Ravens now sit atop the AFC North, while the Steelers are on the outside looking in, as it relates to the playoff picture. Smith-Schuster apologized for it on Monday via this tweet.
When I’m at my lowest, I’m not going to hide. I’m sorry. That loss was on me. I let everyone down, it won’t happen again. pic.twitter.com/amLOGJxino
