One thing that NFL wide receiver Josh Gordon had to do this season was earn the trust of his bosses. After being suspended multiple times over the last few years, it was reasonably difficult to trust the troubled star. While dealing with mental health issues, and addiction off the field, Gordon was hardly able to put his skills to the test with the Cleveland Browns. And during the first couple of weeks in 2018 season, the Browns decided that enough was enough. So they traded Gordon away to the New England Patriots.
The Patriots were the perfect landing spot for Gordon. A no non-sense organization that cares about one thing – winning the Super Bowl. The Patriots have become the ideal landing spot for veterans who need a serious organization that can offer them the best opportunity to snag a ring. In Gordon’s case, it was the best opportunity to keep him out of trouble. Unfortunately, even the New England Patriots couldn’t prevent that. Just because they couldn’t avoid it, doesn’t mean they didn’t try, though.
How Did the Patriots Try to Prevent Another Slip Up?
According to ESPN’s NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Patriots had security surrounding Gordon at all times. Basically, the Patriots didn’t trust him enough to be unsupervised. Therefore, they had professionals around him to avoid another slip-up. Apparently, even that plan didn’t work because now Gordon is out for another suspension. Nobody knows when Gordon’s slip up occurred, but the team is under the assumption that it happened during the bye week back in November.
Now, the Patriots will have to move forward without their star wide receiver. There’s no telling if/when Gordon will be back, but we can probably assume that if he is ready to come back sometime in the near future, it probably won’t be with the Patriots. And considering his track record, it would take a lot for a team to take a chance on Gordon once again. This could be it for Josh Gordon in the NFL.
