Tomorrow’s already wacky main event for UFC 206 just got a little wackier. Anthony Pettis badly missed weight today for his featherweight fight with Max Holloway, weighing in at 148 pounds, three pounds over the limit. So, tomorrow night’s fake interim UFC Featherweight Title fight will only be a title fight for Holloway – if Pettis wins he won’t get the fake title. 20% of his purse will also go to Holloway. It’s been almost 10 years (Travis Lutter at UFC 67 in February 2007) since a fighter missed weight for a title fight (if you really consider tomorrow night’s fight a title fight).
Pettis isn’t the only one to struggle with the scale today – two other fighters also missed weight. Strawweight Valerie Letourneau came in at 117.5 pounds, and lightweight Rustam Khabliov weighed 158 pounds. They’ll also both forfeit 20% of their purses to their opponents.
If Pettis wins tomorrow night, besides missing out on the fake title, will he also miss out on the title fight with fake UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo that was promised to the winner of tomorrow night’s main event? Can the UFC trust Pettis to make it down to the 145-pound weight limit in the future for such an important fight?
