Step 3: Play defense like it’s December
NBA December defense? No thank you.
Normally mid-season D in the NBA is atrocious. But for the Wolves, from mid-December to mid-January they played their most inspiring defense of the season. Which is…. weird, right?
I can’t explain it, but the Wolves went on a tear going 12-3 over that stretch led by their defense. At one point during this impressive streak, they held their opponents to under 100 points in seven straight games.
Maybe this was Thibs getting through to his players? Maybe it was the players just deciding to give a crap and play hard?
Honestly, I have no idea.
But we need more of it! If Minnesota can slow the game down and make it a gritty, grind-it-out style of basketball, they might stand a chance. This should play right into Thibs’ wheelhouse.
