In the immortal expression of Castle Moonbeam's maintenance man Igor~~ "Yaaawwnnnnn…ZZZZZ"…
Another Pleasant Valley Sunday—charcoal burning everywhere—little or no Iggles news, just that dead spot between now and TC 5 weeks away. Oh, I guess I could slog a blog about the continued speculation over the QB competition, or whine about Jeremy Maclin's contract and how it should not be extended. But I just can't do that. Why?
Because I don't care.
I don't care WHO the starting QB for the Eagles ends up being…Just win, baby.
I don't care if Maclin needs to play out the final year of his current contract before being offered an extension and a signing bonus. Just win, baby.
Take the Maclin mini-controversy, for example. Here's an example of a great athlete with "work in progress" still stamped all over him—yet he's been an overall blessing to the Eagles wide receiving corps. Good enough to be featured at #1 or #2. And if he stays healthy and keeps getting better at his craft, certainly this is a guy you'd love to be playing for your team well into the rest of this decade.
But the kids just don't understand— 'kids" being those many fans out here in the Valley that think Maclin stinks.
Here's the usual "blog-slog" against Maclin:
"He has been injury prone since his days at Mizzou. Great player, though. Would love to see him with the Chiefs."
That is just so cruel on so many levels!!!
Here's some more slog:
"Maclin has been supposed to have a breakout season the last few years yet has never broke out. He’s still a solid number two receiver, just not quite a number one receiver."
I'll have the usual…slog on rye…hold the mayo…
"I’m a huge Eagles fan but I can’t stand Maclin and Jackson…too soft.."
Softness is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose… A beholder who has never played tackle football…
"I just wish he didnt get ‘injured’ after every other contact. I don't know who spends more fake time on the ground him or LeBron James.."
What am I gonna do with you kids?
"He was drafted first round #19 in 2009. He has never shown himself to be a #1 receiver, never had a 1,000 yard season, and he’s listed at 6′ tall, which means he’s 5’10″. Sounds like he already makes too much money, will he even make the team?"
Go to your room!
"He should learn how to take care of himself first and actually play a whole season."
Child Please!!?
"It’s been obvious for some time that he’s just a guy. When is the last time Maclin has been double covered all game long? You don’t win championships with average joe’s starting for you. Some Eagles fans seem to hate Jackson, but at least he’s a player other teams scheme for. Maclin, not so much. Tells you all you need to know."
Go get daddy a beer out of the fridge…
Welcome to Negadelphia. Sheesh.
The knowledge that better play will bring better pay should mean there’s no shortage of motivation for Maclin to turn his thoughts of getting better into reality. And he can get better. The great thing is, he's already very good, and he's getting a shot to be featured in a new offensive system.
See, those are the kinds of things kids just don't understand.
That…and just win, baby.
