A bad look for the NFL came late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s NFC title game, when one of the worst calls we’ve ever seen in a playoff contest benefited the Rams, and screwed the Saints.
It was clear that the officials were letting the Rams play, as they got away with contact on the Saints receivers in the game at Mercedes-Benz Superdome a number of times, especially in the second half. Nickell Robey-Coleman, in particular, clearly interfered with a third-and-seven pass that would’ve put the Saints in field-goal range, but nothing was called.
Normally, when the officials went one slide on a particular player, that next one gets called, though. Apparently that was not the case with Robey-Coleman. On a third-and-10 scenario with under two minutes remaining in the game, Robey-Coleman banged right into Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis with the ball in the air. Not only that, he did so by leading with his helmet, so there were a number of potential penalty calls the refs couldn’t gone with. Miraculously, they went with none, and the Saints were forced to settle for a field goal, rather than kicking one with no time remaining, or scoring a touchdown.

Officials missed a call that could have been pass interference, helmet to helmet, unnecessary roughness, face guarding, any of them. Instead it was none of them.

Gotta feel for Saints players and fans. That was an absolute joke, and everyone knows it.
