If it wasn’t for bad luck, the San Diego Chargers would have no luck at all.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett—an emerging young player who shut down Allen Robinson and Jeremy Maclin in back-to-back weeks to start the season—is now worried he might have a torn ligament in his knee. The team currently “does not know the extent of the injury,” but tests are being done on Wednesday to determine any potential damage.
Verrett has been playing with the injury for the last two weeks, which would help explain his slip after such a strong start to his season.
Finding any significant damage to Verrett’s knee would be another huge blow to San Diego’s disappointing 2016 season.
The Chargers have started 1-3, with all three losses coming in games in which San Diego held a late lead. Not only are the tragic losses stacking up, but so are the injuries; the Chargers have already lost receivers Keenan Allen and Stevie Johnson, running back Danny Woodhead and linebacker Manti Te’o to season-ending injuries, and first-round pick Joey Bosa still hasn’t made his NFL debut because of a hamstring injury.
A Pro Bowl cornerback a year ago, Verrett started the 2016 season by allowing just seven combined catches to Robinson and Maclin in Weeks 1 and 2. While T.Y. Hilton got the best of Verrett in Week 3, an injury to San Diego’s star corner could provide some clarity on how the Colts receiver managed eight catches, 173 yards and the game-winning touchdown against the Chargers.
San Diego should know soon if Verrett will miss games moving forward. Any kind of serious injury for the young cornerback would only add to the misery of the Chargers’ season.
