Today was decision day for the future of running back Ryan Mathews, and after passing a physical today, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports the team informed Mathews that he will be released.

Mathews joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 on a three-year deal, and played through numerous injuries throughout his tenure, something that has followed Mathews his entire career.

Mathews missed three games in the 2016 season, and suffered a herniated disk in the Eagles’ Week 16 match-up against the New York Giants, placing him on injured reserve.

With a long history of injury issued, along with a stacked backfield for the Eagles, it was just a matter of time before Mathews would be let go. Due to his neck injury, the Eagles had to wait until he was cleared to play in order to release him.

In his two seasons with the team, Mathews racked up 1,200 yards, 14 rushing touchdowns, and two receiving touchdowns.

With Mathews’s release, the Eagles look to secure about $5 million in cap space as they continue to build into the future.
