Russell Wilson proposes one field goal attempt to settle ties

Seattle Seahawks v Arizona Cardinals

The Seahawks and Cardinals played to an agonizing 6-6 tie Sunday night, and Russell Wilson has an idea to prevent something like that from ever happening again.

According to ESPN.com, the Seahawks quarterback suggests that the team winning the overtime coin toss would have the option of getting the ball on its opponent’s 35-yard line or giving the ball to its opponent on its 35. Whichever team has the ball attempts a field goal. If that team makes the field goal, it wins. If it misses the field goal, it loses.

Cardinals kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed a 24-yard field goal with 3:26 left in overtime Sunday night and Seahawks kicker Steven Hauschka missed a 28-yarder with 11 seconds left.

NFL teams and their fans like ties about as much as dad likes getting a tie for Christmas. But there are a couple of problems with Wilson’s idea.

First, if a team gets the ball on the 35, that’s a 52- or a 53-yard field goal try. So just about every team winning the coin toss would want to give the ball to its opponent. Also, the NHL has settled ties with shootouts since 2005 and not everyone is in love with it. Giving just one team the ball would be even worse than the shootout concept.

“I just think that if you play that long, you’re putting your lives on the line. You should find a way to win. I don’t like ending in a tie,” Wilson said.

OK, Russ. We get it. Player safety is important. But this won’t work any better than your “recovery water.”
