Analyzing QB Sam Bradford’s major beef with the Eagles (specifically with owner Jeff Lurie, GM Howie Roseman and head coach Doug Pederson) just got a lot easier. His agent Tom Condon basically broke it down like this for ESPN:
“They did not tell Bradford they had a plan to draft a quarterback high in the first round, to relinquish so many valuable draft picks in a mega-trade to move up to No. 2 and essentially make Bradford a lame duck starter.”
“As they were making this plan, it would have been nice if they had told him about it,” said Condon, who said that he re-iterated to Eagles Vice President of Football Operations Howie Roseman in a recent phone conversation that Bradford wants out of Philadelphia.
“Basically, our contention is that the team could have used the draft picks on offensive and defensive players for this season, to win this season,” said Condon. “If the plan was to build for the future, where does that leave Sam this year?”
Condon said he hopes the Eagles “realize the best way for this to resolve itself is to try to get something in return for Sam now in a trade,” instead of waiting until 2017.
Sheeesh.
Howie Roseman’s response went public, too; according to BEANSTALKER, you can sum up Howie’s take like this—
“Howie reiterating Sam is the Starter was interesting –
A) He wants Sam to stay and play lights out in 2016.
B) He wants other teams to offer good trade value, which will be before the end of day two of the draft.
C) He wants Sam to change his contract if he wants to go. ”
Apparently Howie and Bradford did exchange some words over the situation when the Big Trade-Up for a future franchise QB was announced last week:
Condon: “Howie and Doug knew how Sam felt. Sam made it very clear to them, he was adamant when they informed him last week about the trade up to No. 2. He told them he was not very happy about it. He made that very clear. So this [trade demand] comes as no surprise.”
Needless to say, this entire boondoggle could have been avoided by a much more up-front form of communication among Bradford, his bosses and his agent. Now it’s going to take three Dr. Phil’s to fix it—if it’s even possible to salvage it at all.
Find me a silver lining in all this—right now a pall is cast upon my previously joyous approach to this Draft.
Even ~BROZ’ once highly anticipated Drafttek articles have lost their luster. A quick look at the Eagles current mock by ~BROZ shows:
1- Wentz
3- Cryus Jones, CB Bama
5- Graham Glasgow, G/C Wolverines
5- Alex Lewis, LOT, CORNHUSKERS !!!!!
Then various -n- sundry knobs and meaningless 6th and 7th rounders who are not named Wentz or Bradford…
Thanks, Howie, Doug, Sam and Mr. Lurie for ruining my Draftmas Eve.
