Apparently Steve Young was a heartthrob even in the old Tampa Bay Buccaneers creamsicle uniform.
In his book “QB: My Life Behind the Spiral” with Jeff Benedict, Young reveals that a referee gave him a break in a 1985 game so that Young would go out with his daughter.
According to the MMQB, Young said the head referee tapped him on the shoulder when he was in the huddle and asked to talk to him for a second.
“Hey, listen, my daughter’s going to BYU,” he whispers. “I’d like you to take her out.”
Then in the fourth quarter, with the Bucs trailing 31-23, Young took a hit and fumbled the ball away. Then the aforementioned official called a personal foul on the Colts, giving Tampa Bay a first down.
“Then the ref walks past me and whispers she likes Italian food,” said Young, who like the ref’s daughter also attended BYU.
This isn’t the kind of thing fans like to hear. Who knows if this was an isolated incident, not just with this referee but around the league.
Of course, these were the Bucs. They couldn’t take advantage of the gift they were given, and lost the game. They finished the 1985 season 2014.
