Thomas Davis is confident the Carolina Panthers will revive their season, but he still can’t believe the defending NFC champions have started 1-5 in 2016.
“No way would I have believed that,’’ Davis said, via ESPN. “I would have bet everything that I have that we wouldn’t be that. But here we are. We are 1-5 and it’s all about what are we going to do moving forward to dig ourselves out of this hole that we’ve dug.’’
The Panthers lost the New Orleans Saints in Week 6, falling to 1-5. Since 1990, only one team—the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015—has rebounded from a 1-5 start to make the postseason. It took 10 straight wins from the Chiefs to recover from the early season hole.
The Panthers might have to do the same to get back to the playoffs.
Davis knows Carolina has to take it one game at a time.
“Whether it has been done or not, we believe in each other and this team,’’ Davis said. “We feel like we can do it. But it’s all about winning one game. We’ve got to win the next game we play. We can’t get too focused in on what’s going to happen in the future or after playing this game.’’
The Panthers take on the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 30, in a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship Game. Carolina is on a bye in Week 7.
The two NFC finalists are currently going in opposite directions. Carolina has lost four straight games, while the Cardinals are back on track after winning back-to-back games, including Monday night’s 28-3 win over the New York Jets.
Davis knows the Panthers are down. He also knows it’ll take a win against the Cardinals to keep Carolina’s 2016 season alive.
