It’s already that time of year again. Leaves are raining down from the trees, colors changing to basketball brown. And the NBA season is arriving sooner than usual.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you (or someone you know) might have interest in writing on the roundball.
The Lottery Mafia’s main areas of focus include the NBA Draft, the league’s non-playoff teams, international and college basketball, the WNBA, and the G-League. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in this game. For instance, Matt Moore of CBS is re-booting Hardwood Paroxysm 5.0, which is sure to be sweet.
No prior experience is required, but there’s also no budget to pay anybody (yet).
With that being said, members of our family have been published by The Washington Post, Sports Illustrated, FanSided, SBNation, Hardwood Paroxysm, HoopsHabit, RotoWire, and The Cauldron. There’s nothing quite like honing your craft. Sure, getting paid is way better than just receiving exposure. But we all start somewhere, and we all have different goals.
When I started writing for the site years ago after TLM’s founder James Plowright reached out to me, I was finishing my journalism degree, and I thought this (basketball web writing) was what I wanted to do for a living. Fast forward a few years and I still hold down some regular beats and pitch freelance here and there, but I earn most of my keep as a tennis coach. For me, writing about basketball is still fun. At the end of the day, that’s why I continue to do it.
